Q: how many bags of grass seed do I need? My lawn is about 500 sq ft. It has only soil and zero grass now. How many bags of grass seed do I need to re-grow my lawn? Scotts Turf grass seed + Scotts Turf Builder lawn fertilize + Scotts Turf Builder Lawn Soil = all I need? Thanks!

A: TaylorCat, knowing the square footage is the place to start. The amount of seed you will need depend on the type of seed you are purchasing. Each bag contains coverage information. When looking at the seed bag, make sure to use the coverage for a new seeding. The amount of soil you will need depends on if you are using the soil to amend the native soil or using the as a top dressing. The back of the bag lists a chart that will help you determine how much is needed in your situation. The fertilizer will list the coverage on the bottom corner of the front of the bag, as well.

Q: Lost your point - when you said "...deposit a large quantity of weed seeds on your lawn" Why did you say on your last FAQ anwering page that "... and in addition it may deposit a large quantity of weed seeds on your lawn"?

A: Based on the reply, it appears they were referring to ground dug native topsoil. Most bagged soils have been composted to kill off the majority of harmful weed seeds. Additionally weed seeds can be introduced to the surface when the native soil is turned and loosened in preparation of seeding.

Q: How many bags are needed? Hello, how many bags of this topsoil would I require for a lawn size of 42' x 37'? Also, how many bags of grass seed would I need as well? Many thanks Marilyn c

A: According to the vendor, For a 42 x 37’ lawn you would require 16 bags of Scotts Lawn soil based on the overseeding recommendation of 1/8” cover. In terms of seed you need to cover 1500ft2 so you could purchase 1 bag of Scotts Turf Builder Coated Seed Sun 7 Shade 3.2kg or 2 bags of Scotts Turf Builder Coated Seed Sun & Shade 1.4kg (with a little left over for patching needs) Note: Topsoil is not recommended as a top dressing for lawns. Topsoil is typically used for filling holes or grading and has limited nutrient value (compost, hummus etc.) which is required for optimum grass health and in addition it may deposit a large quantity of weed seeds on your lawn. Lawn soils are enriched and most are guaranteed weed free.
