Worked great until...

I bought this a few years back and it worked well at charging batteries. The manual is not very easy to understand or follow. I figured out to just hook it up to the battery and ignore it until charged. I could never get the different charging modes to work. Today I accidentally reversed the cables for just a second and got a big spark and then nothing. I unplugged it for an hour and tried again and still nothing. What happened to the reverse cable hookup protection??? It states that it has this protection in the product description but it sure didn't work and now this charger is dead.

Do not trust your battery to this charger.

I bought unit specifically because it was a "smart" charger for AGM batteries. My mistake. I plugged my battery in and after charging overnight, checked my batteries ablitiy to hold a charge. NOT GOOD. I put the charger back on in the 12 charging mode and measured the voltages applied. The charger was applying 15.7 volts to and AGM batter. WAY TO MUCH. I think this battery has been damaged.

Not really sure where to rate it? Schumacher is usually pretty good stuff but it’s hard to tell if this thing is charging or not?? Supposed to toggle with a button between voltage and % of charge but that doesn’t seem to work - so I’m stuck guessing with my voltmeter!!

When I hook up the charger it and turn on it shuts off after 5 sec or so. Will only charge on 100 Amp mode. Tried all settings.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Getting a battery charger/engine starter for your household seriously does not get any better than this! It is super easy to use and labeled quite well. My husband is a mechanic so I know my way around these pretty well but I would feel as confident using this if I were a single woman needing to start my car or charge a battery. It charges fast and hardly makes any noise at all while charging. The cord length was perfect and I love that it has a wrap up bracket for the cables. One positive feature that I am quite impressed with is the reverse hook up protection. I just have to boast about this because I think we've all heard stories of hooking up cables to the wrong posts!

Yes, I recommend this product.
