Q: The package I bought said it had fescue, kentucky blue, rye and RTF in it. The package picture on the item on the website says fescue and RTF only. Is this a different product or is one of the labeling incorrect?

A: I contacted the manufacturer and got this answer: It would appear that Canadian Tire has not updated their website since the last bag redesign we did with them in 2019. The images on the website are the old packaging. However the formulation has not changed. Due to Canadian regulations we now must declare on the packaging the other varieties in the lawn seed mixture. Also, the Water Saver on the www.barusa.com website is the American version and it is a different formulation than what we have created especially for Canadian Tire, which is why the bags are different. The percentage of RTF in this mixture is 30%.

Q: What's the % of the various grass seed types in this mixture?

A: Emailed the manufacturer and promptly got this answer: "Water Saver RTF is made up of Tall fescue with a minor amount of inert matter, crop seed, and weed seed all remnants after the cleaning process. A recent bag from the warehouse consisted of: 38.47 % RTF tall fescue 59.53 % turf-type tall fescue 00.20 % Other crop seed 01.70 % inert matter 00.10 % Weed seed Every lot of Water Saver RTF will be slightly different depending on seed yields from grass seed farmer's fields and the cleaning process. Precise information is found on the label." Every bag has the 0.10% weed seed, why you see the label on them saying "99.9% weed free". This bad stands out for me because it's 100% tall fescue and not mixed, and it is literally 100% seed in the bag, not like 70% seed and 30% coating like the more well-known brands.

Q: What is the yield for the 2kg size? i.e. how many square feet of lawn will it cover (for over-seeding)?

A: The overseeding rate is 3 to 4 pounds per thousand square feet. Otherwise, it's 6 to 8 pounds to the thousand square feet.

Q: Can I store this product unopened till next season?

A: Yes, you can store grass seed in a cool and dry place. The germination rates should keep well for several months

Q: Sun or shade? I have a shady tree that current grass is reluctant to grow under, will this one do well in both Sun and shade?

A: Yes, the varieties contained in Water Saver are all Fescue’s which are the most shade tolerant of all grass seed species. That being said, all grasses need about an hour of sun a day to survive. The biggest challenge with shade areas is the pH balance of the soil - I recommend that you check your pH balance and correct it if necessary.
