Q: I used the kit and after three days the water was still yellow however on the 4th day after the cabin got very hot the water went green. What does this mean?

A: In the WaterCheck Test Kit, the colour change of the sample is dependent on the temperature at which the sample is stored. For example, at 35 deg C, coliform will turn the water sample blue-green within 24 hours, at 30C it takes up to 36 hours and at 24C it can take up to 60 hours. So if your sample turned blue-green on the 4th day, the question is what was the ambient temperature? The test powder has been specifically designed for the preferential growth of coliform bacteria. If present, coliform outgrow other bacterial species (that may be present in the water sample) and turn the sample blue-green. However, if coliform are not present, the colour will stay yellow within the specific timeline indicated, after which the sample will eventually turn blue-green due to the presence of other non-pathogenic bacterial species. So if your water sample was stored at the right temperature and did not turn blue-green within the stipulated time, then your water is safe to drink.
