Light and Easy to Handle

I was very happy with this product because it was light and easy to move. Since it was compressed, it spread over a lot of the Pollinator Garden I was starting. Two bags covered the entire garden easily.

Questions

Q: Would you recommend this quality-wise and price-wise over the bulk soil from Less Mess or Big Yellow Bag. I figure I would need about 7 or 8 bags (4 cu.ft./each) to equal 1 cubic yard you get from bulk suppliers.

  • A: The Big Yellow Bag soil isn't for container growing and has no fertilizer in it. PRO-MIX has fertilizer added to a mixture of peat and perlite (that holds more water) and is meant more for container growing and raised beds. If you are buying the soil for a raised bed I would use the big rectangular compressed 16.3 kg bag (= 4 of the 28L bags) of PRO-MIX and mix in some heavier black earth to help it stay put or it will blow all away in the wind...and then mulch over top. But if you are building a regular garden bed, I would go with the Big YB that has good mineral balance in the soil but no food, then amend the soil with maybe one big cube of PRO-MIX since it will add a bit of peat moss to allow flower/veg roots to develop easier and lower the pH nicely. Vegetable kind has heavier feed fertilizer (mainly for tomatoes that are super heavy feeders) that feeds for 3 mos, all-purpose feeds lighter over 9 mos. KNow that if you are growing any kind of bean or pea - either vegetable or flower - do not use any growing medium with added fertilizer or any nitrogen fertilizer (like Miracle Gro). Beans & peas put nitrogen in the soil and if too much is already there, they won't sprout.

Q: All of my baskets and planters which had this product failed. The plants simply did not grow or thrive. Many died. I tested the PH and found it to be very acid (5.5). After adding lime, the PH came up to about 6.5. Any suggestions?

  • A: I found every bale to be infested with tiny insects called thrips. As soon as they get out of control, they can kill plants. Steer clear of soils from anywhere that stores the packages outside.

Q: would this be good for starting a vegitable garden? first time gardener not sure what to use....

  • A: This would be good for starting seeds indoors and perhaps for planter boxes, etc. There are cheaper alternatives such as compost, composted manures, peat moss, or coir, or composted leaves, if you are starting large garden, and need some soil conditioner.
