Q: I want to know if this extension chord is safe to use outdoors all year around for lights I have outdoors?

A: The Canadian Electric Code specifies that extension cords are intended for use as a temporary source of power. This is interpreted as having a maximum period of time of 90 days. If you are wanting to have a permanent electrical supply the only recommendation is for an licensed electrician to install the appropriate wiring for the application that is familiar with local regulations and codes.

A: This extension cord has a maximum electrical rating of 13A/125V/1625W. As long as the cautions and warnings supplied with the extension cord and those supplied with the engine block heater are strictly adhered too, then this cord should be appropriate. The cautions and warnings supplied with the extension cord are attached to the cord at the end with the male plug. As a word of caution, there are block heaters with wattage ratings greater than 1625 Watts, the maximum rating of the 522398. If the block heater in question has an electrical rating greater than 1625 Watts, we suggest considering a 14 or 12 gauge extension cord.

Q: Is it safe to connect two extension cords together to make it 100 ft My lawn mower is 120V 10A. I'm thinking to buy two of this extension cords to connect together to make it 100 ft so that I can access anywhere of my lawn easily. Much appreciated if you can comment on my concern. Thanks.

A: It is never recommended to connect two cords together. While it may help you get the length you need, there is an increase in electrical resistance where the cords are connected. This means that two cords cannot carry the same amount of electrical current as a single cord. Always try to buy the correct cord length for your needs. The 3 things you need to consider when buying a cord is distance, amperage draw from your equipment and gauge. At a distance of 100’ with a 10 amp lawn mower you could use 052-2393 30M garden cord. However, at 10 amps you are drawing the maximum capacity the cord can carry. You cannot use this cord for anything over 10 amps so if you intend to buy a more powerful lawn mower in the future or plan on using it with a table saw, you might want to get a 30M 14 gauge cord (052-2384) to be safe.
