Questions

Q: Is this charger/maintainer better suited for 'marine' applications as opposed to car (vehicle) applications? For cars, should I be looking at a different brand??

3 Answers
  • A: This is a smart, AGM compatible charger. (AGM is still a type of lead acid battery.)

Q: Can this charger be used to fully charge or maintain charge of the Lead-Calcium (Pb-Ca) 110ah battery in our 2008 Audi A8 4.2? If so, should it be connected directly to the battery or with the negative side connected to the post for boosting?

2 Answers
  • A: Sorry, I am not an expert on battery technology but I think the Lead-Calcium battery you are referring to is a Gel battery. The Nautilus charger has settings for normal lead acid batteries, absorbed glass mat (AGM) batteries, and Gel batteries. I have used the charger for cars with normal lead acid batteries and have had no problem bringing low charges back up to 100%. The charger automatically switches to maintain mode once the battery is charged. Note that it is a charger, not a booster. As per the instructions, most cars have grounded negative pole batteries. If yours does too you should attached the positive cable to the positive terminal on the battery and the negative cable to the grounding post on the engine block (i.e., just like boosting). I have always been told that with lead acid batteries, attaching the negative cable directly to the negative post on the battery risks arcing between the two posts and a potential explosion/fire if H2 gas leaks from the battery.

Q: Can this charger be used to charge a 12V 200ah LiFePO4 battery?

2 Answers
  • A: No, this battery charger is not recommend for LiFePO4 batteries. You should choose a battery charger with a specific lithium battery mode. Charger modes designed for lead-acid batteries may use high voltages (e.g. 15V+) during certain stages of the charging process which can be damaging to lithium batteries. Currently, Canadian Tire offers NOCO battery chargers that are suitable for 12V LiFePO4 batteries.

Q: can you charge a regular car battery with this also?

  • A: My dad used it for his Ford Explorer. He doesn’t drive enough for the battery to maintain the charge. He loves this product. His car always starts now. So yes, to your question.

Q: What do the 3 alternating bars discribe during RECONDITION mode? Manual does not help, only states it may take up to 4 hours - both fully charged batteries display these bars for 2-3 minutes before switching to 100% Did charger complete the Recondition?

1 Answer
  • A: The 3 bars is simply what is displayed while the unit is in Reconditioning process. The duration of a Reconditioning attempt can be up to 4 hours however is ultimately determined by feedback the charger receives from the battery. If the Reconditioning attempt lasts only a few minutes it means the charger, based on feedback from the battery during those few minutes, has determined that further reconditioning is not required.

Q: I am using this charger to charge a 2Amp. marine battery used for a 12 volt backup sumersible sump pump. After 24 hours the charger was indicating battery charged at 70%. More than 12 hours later it is still indicating 70%. Is this normal?

1 Answer
  • A: In order to prevent the device from being damaged by overcharging, this charger has a timeout function after 24 hours, which is why it stayed at 70% after 24 hours. It is recommended to use either 8A or 15A option for your 2A marine battery.

Q: Can this charger get wet?   Not submerged but splashed or rained on?   I’m looking at mounting in my boat to charge my trolling motor batteries.

1 Answer
  • A: No, this charger should not be subjected to rain or water splashing. While Canadian Tire offers several IP65 rated battery chargers that can get wet (such as NOCO Genius and select MotoMaster Eliminator Precision Series chargers), charging a battery onboard a boat in water requires special equipment. We would recommend you consider MotoMaster Nautilus 3-Bank 15A Onboard Battery Charger (011-1985) or one of the NOCO Genius Onboard models.
