Confirmed 5W-30 is 229.51 compliant
Some of the above postings may seem to contradict each other regarding 229.5 and 229.51. Today I have confirmed based on labelling that the 0w-40 is compliant only for 229.5 while the 5w-30 is compliant for 229.51. The 5w-30 meets standards for the Jeep Grand Cherokee WK series (mine is a 2008 Mercedes engine) and as such finally offers an economical option for Canadian consumers. The price today on sale was 28 and change for a 5L jug on sale.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Great Euro Oil, Made by Citgo USA
Great Euro motor oil for a great price on sale. This product is actually made by Citgo and it is the Citgo Superguard Euro Synthetic Oil. The Citgo 5W40 is VW approved, but the other three viscosity should follow suit. I wished they would carry 5W40 which is the recommended Euro oil for many VW's, but 0W40 is okay as it is thinner viscosity for winter cold start-up.

Q: Hi,
Can we be sure this is MB 229.51 APPROVED, and safe to use in a 3.0 CRD Diesel engine? On an 07 Grand Cherokee.
Thanks!

A: You will only get an APPROVED rating if Mercedes actually tested the oil (which costs money) Mercedes publishes a list of approved oils every year, very few are on the list for North America. Meets or excceds is NOT the same as approved. Please refer to yourowners manual.

Q: The Mercedes 229.51 specification is for a 3.0 turbo DIESEL engine but the label on the container clearly states "for gasoline engines". Gas and diesel oils have specific properties. No oil can be both so is this a diesel or gas oil?

A: canadian tire response is NOT correct. Mercedes requires any oils used in their engines be APPROVED by them. Hence it should say Approved by, not meets or recommended. This means it was never tested by Mercedes. And MB229.51 is a low SAPS oil not SPAsh whatever that means. Refers to low (less then 0.8 percent) ash content so it is particulate filter safe. This spec is only found on diesel engines. Why it says for gasoline engines on the bottlenot sure. Same for the VW 504 and 507 specs, they apply to diesel engines.
Yes most oils used today are both gas and diesel engine, but a gas only oil as the bottle states is not a good indication for this oil.
I am using it for both Mercedes and VW. If a warrsnty issue related to the engine oil ever comes up not sure what either manufacturer wil do, for sure Mercedes will claim improper oil according to their terms written in the owners manual.

Q: Are any of these oil actually "approved" for the specs, or only "suitable"? Those are two very different statements.

A: Canadian tire doesn't make any oil. It just rebrands existing oils. This oil is made by CITGO and probably has all of those certifications. Canadian tire probably doesn't want to pay the licensing fees, so they say "suitable", but really, it means the same thing because it is the same oil.
