Q: Will this, for sure, be okay to use in a lawn mower whose manual states oil type as: "API: SG-SL" and "SAE-30 (above 0oC)" as the oil type, despite being an OHV engine? Thanks! (mower is a Yardworks 675 EXi series, 163cc OHV push mower)

A: Motomaster Lawnmower Oil SAE 30 is an API SN, SAE 30 gasoline engine oil. All API service categories are backward compatible. Thus, Motomaster Lawnmower Oil SAE 30 is suitable for use in the engine of a Yardworks 675 EXi series mower.

Q: I used this oil in my lawn tractor which is a overhead valve engine because the manufacturer manual says to use SAE30 oil.
What's the impact of using a non-ohv oil in a OHV engine?
1 Answer
A: If an OEM Manual calls for a SAE 30 instead of a 5W-30 or 10W-30 that is fine to use the SAE 30 in that OHV engine. The difference is not in the additive, but in the polymer that makes the oil a Multi-grade oil. OHV engines typically call for multi-grades due to the distance the oil has to be pumped before contacting the cam. The multi-grade viscosity oils will be able to get the oil to the rocker arms (and cams in OHC configuration) much quicker due to their lower viscosity at colder temperatures. The longer the engine runs without oil in these areas the more wear occurs. As we always state on labels: consult your owner’s manual for proper lubricant selection
