Huge difference over our old unit!

First. NEVER. RENT. A WATER HEATER. NEVER. They are the cheapest junk that they can find. We installed this one, the exterior stays cold as do the pipes. Who knew that could happen? The former rental was always very warm, and both cold and hot lines, were always hot. The old rental had an aftermarket fiberglass blanket, and you could still heat lunch on top if you wanted. This Moffat provides excellent performance surely saving us a ton of money. Fully adjustable temperature settings, easy hook up. Great quality unit. Looks good too, if that's important to you!

A: From what I see, both GSW and as of 2021, formerly Canadian-owned Giant; are both owned by A.O. Smith which is an American company. Quite possibly Giant still manufacturers water heaters in Quebec.

Q: Is there an advantage to having a "bottom entry" water heater? I can see the big '9' on the tank in the photo, but can you tell me what it means?

A: I don't see one. If you have a " top entry" there's an internal pipe that goes to the bottom with the cold water which is about the same. Bottom probably just saves money for the manufacturer. The 9 is years warranty. 9 years against perforation.

Q: which hot water heaters are energy efficient

A: The 184L 3800 Watt heater is about efficient as they come. It has a standby loss of 57 watts an hour. A tankless heater is more efficient but you waste some water at start up as it takes time for the heaters to turn on. I also talked to NB Power, and they don't like the amount of power they draw. It takes about 20,000 watts of power to heat 2 GPM from 50 F to 105 F. Dishwashers need 140 degree water so that would take close to 32,000 watts. Might need a bigger electric input for these kind of power needs. The most energy efficient system is to hook up a preheater tank to recover the heat lost from your hot water tank, and preheat the water in summer to 75 F. This cuts your water heating cost by about 25%. Hope this helps.

A: It requires 240V, 25 amp to operate and suggested installation is with 10 gauge wire. This is a hard wire installation.
