Spoke Shaver - starts as a project

Like lots of inexpensive tools, when you get it into your workshop it starts out as a project. First I stripped off the coating on the blade so the abrasive doesn't get clogged up - I used lacquer thinner. Then sharpen the blade - first flatten the back to erase the milling grooves at least nearest the cutting edge, then grind the bevel to eliminate more milling grooves and get to a usable cutting edge. Another reviewer noted the bottom is rough - true. Not only that, it's coated with the same finish as the rest of the handle, so as it wears off it leaves black tracks on the wood being shaved. That's my next step: file and grind the sole down to bare metal and be sure the metal is flat. Still, I'm not surprised. The alternative would cost at least 8 times as much for a tool ready to use out-of-the-box. If time is money, get the alternative.

No, I do not recommend this product.

adequate for less precise work if tuned up

the casting is rough and the base far from flat, the mouth ragged, the blade needed an hour of work, but it has a nice heavy feel good for hogging wood, especially after replacing the blade with A2 or O1 steel. Either spend the time regrinding the base and filing the mouth, and buy a quality blade, however,, and it can be a nice addition to a workshop to spare your more precise 'shaves for more precise work.

No, I do not recommend this product.

This tool is a must for a wood carver . I like the tool as you can adjust for a left handed person . I made a rattle for my daughter the handle was very easy with this tool.

    Yes, I recommend this product.
