proves you get what you pay for!

The BBQ was good at the start (first use only). Grills rusted really quick even when I seasoned them following the recommended instructions. Need stainless steel or cast iron grates. Very disappointed in Master Chef and this product. Only thing it is good for is baked potatoes in tin foil. Buy a better one with the above mentioned grills/grates.

Q: Secondary cooking surface I am comparing the T420 and T440. In the photos, both seem to have a warming rack above the main cooking rack. Could you pls explain what the secondary cooking surface is and what's the difference in these two BBQ's cooking surfaces.

    • A: Thank you for your question. There is no difference in feature set for these two BBQ's. Although, the S420 is a 2013 design and the T440 is a 2012 design. Hope this helps

Q: Do you need rocks or chips in the Master Chef s420? Just bought the Master Chef S420 a couple of weeks ago. It cooks great and we love it. Really dig the electric igniter. Should we have put lava rocks or some other kind of chip/rock in the bottom to help with the grease and all that? Thanks

    • A: Thank you for your question. No, your BBQ does not require lava rock or any other type of radiant because it uses heat plates to channel the grease away from the burners and catch drippings. The key is to keep the heat plates free of grease by cleaning them often with your grill brush to avoid flare ups caused by built up grease. Hope this was helpful.

Q: Can you buy replacement knobs? Can you buy replacement knobs, we had a bad wind storm and our BBQ got knocked over and all 3 knobs are broken off. But the BBQ still works, so we do not want to buy a whole new one.

Q: Fire at one of the control knobs We purchased the S420 Barbecue earlier in the summer of this year. The unit has been functioning well up until now. A few days ago I noticed fire coming out of where the right most control knob is. How can I resolve?

    1 Answer
    • A: Hello and thank you for your question. What you experienced sounds like a flash-fire - this happens when spiders or other insects get into the burner and cause a blockage - and is a common occurrence in the fall. In order to resolve, please remove your burners and clean with a venturi brush. For more details please see your Safe Use and Care manual or call the Master Chef Barbecues customer support at 1-855-453-2150. Thanks,

Q: Can the burner be switched out to a different one? Can the default single burner be replaced with a double burner or an even heat burner?

    1 Answer
    • A: The burning system in the S420 BBQ has been safety certified for proper combustion, best performance, appropriate BTU based on burner count, the L x D x H of the cook surface, and the relationship between a number of other factors. A couple things to consider; all of the burner box configurations, valve assemblies dimensions, how the burner assembles within the burner box, how the burner lights (types of electrodes, type of ignition, assembly to burner), and the dimensions of the burner venturi are all different. Essentially, safety, performance and the life of your system, cannot be warranted or guaranteed to perform, with any alteration to the system.

    • A: Thank you for your question. Great to hear that you are happy with the product. No lava rock is necessary. The product includes; flame tamers which sit over top of your burners to protect them and also to distribute heat more evenly. The key with this BBQ is to remove the build up off of your heat plates on a regular basis. Because they catch all of your drippings, it is common if too much grease has built up to have flare ups on this part. use a plastic paint scrapper- this works best. Also, I would recommend never burning off grease off your cooking grates at the end of your cooking session. Always leave the grease on your grates to protect them until the next usage. Also, remember to preheat on high and adjust the temperature to medium, or min depending on what you are cooking.

Q: Where can I buy an extra set of cooking grates? I went CDN tire to buy some more and they do not sell any in this size or any masterchef ones at all. They used to when I purchased this model but not anymore, why don't you have spare grates for sale when you sell their BBQ's?

Q: does the front portion of the grill heat up or is it only the back? The rear of my MasterChef BBQ seems to heat up more at the rear of the grill then the front. Is this normal for these grills or is there something wrong/broken?

    Anonymous12 years ago
    1 Answer
    • A: Thank you for your question. The model you are referring to is a 4 burner model. This unit when preheated for approximately 10-15 minutes on high, should offer fairly stable temperatures, and should get pretty hot. The key is to ensure that you preheat with the lid closed so that the temperature at the cooking grate surface has the chance to heat and stabilize. However, on most of these grills, the front 2-3 inches of the cooking surface, or the area closest to the user, will run slightly cooler for safety reasons. Another way to check if your unit is running efficiently, is to check the burners flame pattern and height. The burner flame should be between 1-2" high, blue with orange tips, and all ports on all burners must be lit with fairly even flame. If for example, you lit your BBQ and saw large orange flames on one burner, this would indicate an obstruction in your burners venturi- likely a spider or web. You should shut down, wait for the burner to cool and clean the venturi of the burner. If for example, you try to light all 4 burners and 1-3 of the burners are not lighting or have low flame, this would indicate incorrect lighting has occurred and you will need to consult your manual to reset your flow limiting feature built into the regulator. I've probably given more information than you needed, but in the life of your grill, knowing the above information will help you understand the most relevant troubleshooting. Hope this helps. Happy grilling!
