    Security Light

I use this over the back door, where I don't want to leave the outside light on overnight, as it would shine into my bedroom and disrupt my sleep. Trial and error to find the right angle so that the cat didn't set it off. Works fine.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

works well, but could be brighter

Bought about a month ago for yard light. Worked ok over garage door, but not very bright. Moved to a spot directly above my car in driveway, works perfect for going out at night or unloading car. Remember that it's only battery operated light, not a big spotlight ! If you wanted a spotlight you should have shopped for that product. Works fine for described purpose.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

I bought one and swivel head was broken, returned it and got another one. I installed it up high on my garage, It only worked for about a week, have not climbed up to look at it to see whats wrong. Not very bright either.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Some light - but not alot

This light was very easy to assemble and has worked well. It doesn't produce alot of light, but it does help going down the stairs at the front of our house during the night. I wouldn't want to read a book under this light though!

    Yes, I recommend this product.

Q: How bright is this light? Wattage? Just wondering how bright I should expect this light to be? ie. Equivilant to a 60 watt/100 watt bulb?

    • A: roughly equal to 25 watt light bulb, pretty much like a flashlight would be. Remember its run only by 2 AA batteries and solar charger.

Q: Is this light weatherproof? We have a long path leading to our entrance. I would like to mount 2-3 of these lights on trees along the path. Will this light withstand winter conditions? Can the batteries be manually recharged during low light conditions (winter)? Thank you.

    • A: This appears to be the HeathCo SL-7210. You can find the manual at http://heath-zenith.hcents.com/data/manuals/598-1316-02.pdf. It's certainly intended for outdoor use and the instructions include both vertical and horizontal (under eave) mounting options. For mounting on a tree, you might consider fudging a small hood (like a visor) right above the unit to prevent rain and snow from falling directly onto it, but that's my suggestion, not theirs. They do recommend a drip loop in the wire to the solar panel so that moisture will run off instead of following the wire to the jack where it connects to the main unit and seeping inside. It comes with 3 AA NiCd cells (NiCds have good cold-weather performance) and it can take either NiCd or NiMH replacements when the batteries die. So, yes you can manually recharge them in any suitable indoor charger. (Best to let them warm up first if it's a fast charger.) Fortunately the batteries (and controls) are easily accessible under a cover on the front. They claim up to 15 days' service without sun which seems optimistic to me. A lot will depend on how sensitive you set the unit (it has adjustable range - this will determine how often it might be triggered falsely) and whether you choose the 1 minute or 5 minute on time. I've been using a very inexpensive motion-sensing light on a shed but it lacks solar charging. The NiMH batteries I use have proven surprisingly capable even at 30 or 40 below. I was going to fudge some kind of solar charger for it but now that I've seen this, I'll be trying one of these instead. The five-year warranty is pretty comforting.
