Disappointing lifespan

So this Garrison 46-0019-0 CO monitor is supposed to last 10 years. The other day it started chirping once every minute which means the battery needs to be replaced. I’ve done that, but it continues to chirp so my guess would be that it’s at the end of its life, even though it should chirp twice every 30 seconds when it’s reached that point. As you can see from the pictures it was made in July 2016. I purchased and powered it on for the first time in March 2017 which means it should fail roughly around March 2027. Seems like I won’t be getting 10 years out of this unit. Not sure if anybody else will get it out of theirs. The funny part is you only get a 5 year warranty on an item that should last 10 years.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Q: my wall outlets are too close to the floor to install my Garrison co2 detector. does it affect performance if it is upside down?

  • A: do your research to the professionals that built this unit. The manufacturing company is actually Kidde, they produce this sub-brand for Canada and CTC. None of the manuals states about mounting. reach out to the head office for Kidde, 1-919-563-5911. The engineering and testing teams are there. They can help you out.

Q: What is the estimated battery and sensor life of this model? If it starts beeping periodically does that mean it needs to be replaced? We think it is probably 3-4 years old.

  • A: This alarm uses the AC power as its primary source. The battery is in case of power failure. It should be changed on a yearly basis even if still "good". Even though it seems a waste, remember that if there is a power failure and for some reason CO is released in the house, the battery then needs to power the alarm to make sure you get out safe. That alone requires a fair amount of power. Never use non alkaline batteries or even rechargeable ones as they are unlike to have enough power to stay at 9V for long.

Q: How to do the testing? Unlike models with obvious "test button" on the front pannel(eg. 46-0315-4) , this model(46-0019-0) doesn't seem to have "press button". Without the testing button, then how am I supposed to perform the testing?

  • A: In the upper center of the detector is a place to press for testing, on the left of this location it says, "Press to test".

Q: The alarm sounded & showed reading of 117. What does that mean? I have model No. 46-0315. It went off and showed a reading of 117. What does that mean? What level reading is dangerous?

2 Answers
  • A: As a follow up to Garrison's answer, any readings above zero on digital display alarm MUST be taken seriously. It means 1 of 2 things, your alarms is testing (in teh 200's, and quickly changes to zero - may show "888") or there is CO. at 117, that is a significant number and you need to get out and call the fire department - from outside the house. DO NOT VENT the house, it will delay your leaving but also, if it is a slow leak, by the time the FD arrives, they may not register anything. just get out.

Q: What is indicated by a continual shreek? Battery separater is removed. CO2 detector is plugged into electrical outlet. I can not turn the unit back on until I figure out how to stop the continual shreeking.

  • A: There is a switch on the back to disable the 'removal from power' shrieking. You'll need something with a point to switch it on and off. This will not switch off the detector but it will switch off the warning if it isn't being properly charged. The detector will eventually fail if it isn't properly powered or charged. S.B.
