Get the largest size you can operate!

I am only buying 10 lb fire extinguisher since I had to use my previous one helping someone on the road. It was the typical (2.5 lb) size most people carry in their cars. To my surprise, it lasted ~20 seconds and we couldn’t extinguish the fire. Few things have been more frustrating than seeing that car burn and realizing I should have carried a larger one. Since then the 10 lb is the only size I have around. I bought the first one of this size more than 10 years ago and still holds pressure. I recently had a close call, so I bought more to have one on each floor of the house, the garage, and each family car. I hope to never find myself needing one again, but if I do the 10 lb can is the only size I want at hand. If 10 lb is too heavy for you, then get the largest size you can operate and consider getting more than one.

A: Years, you only need to recharge it if it gets used. Once a year bang on the bottom with a mallet to keep the powder loose.

Q: This 6:A80:BC extinguisher is described as a 10 lb and also as having a gross weight of 19.25 lbs. Is the 10 lb referring to the weight of the agent inside the tank, while the 20lbs is referring to the weight of the entire extinguisher when fully charged?

A: Hi Glen - you are correct with what you have said. Most extinguishers are described by the weight of the powder (net weight), while the total (gross) weight will be more. Make sure to monitor the pressure gauge on all extinguishers on a monthly basis, to ensure the yellow needle remains in the green section.

A: This extinguisher is refillable/rechargeable. To find a location in your area, look in your local yellow pages under "fire". Independent companies that service fire extinguishers are located throughout the country.

A: The Garrison 10lb model, 46-0056 is capable of being stored outside only if it is protected with a cover and it is maintained within the temperature described on the label on the canister. A protective cover may be purchased through fire service companies across Canada. To contact one of these companies in your area you can look under "Fire: in your yellow pages for companies that service fire extinguishers to purchase this protective cover.

A: The extinguisher is manufactured by Medallion Strike First Home Safety Products Inc. Dimensions are: 21 1/4” H X 5 1/8” D. The extinguisher is 19 1/4 lbs gross weight.
