A great, bare bones, easy to use handheld GPS

If you want a bare bones GPS, then this is it. I was very hesitant about spending a lot of money on a GPS, but this is worth the money. However; the map on it is useless. The map it comes with, there is nothing displayed on the screen. It states it will display cities and major features but it showed nothing for my area. The compass works very well and so does the tracking. I researched online how to upload a different map and it is way better now and will show major features. It was very easy and only took maybe 2 hrs to learn and install a better map. I might eventually upgrade but I really only use it so I do not get lost in the woods. Also it is not bloated with all the other stuff the more expensive GPS comes with like taking pictures. If you are looking for a cheap, easy to use GPS, this is it.

It really uses AA batteries

I was surprised to discover that although this device has a USB port, it uses AA batteries for power. Why can't it just charge with the USB port? Maybe that's some kind of survivalist advantage. I don't know. Other than that I don't really know what the features are, I just wanted a way to record my location quickly and accurately when I'm making observations in nature. It does that very well. It's light and small and very convenient to carry. And unlike a bleeping "smartphone", it doesn't "share your location" with the whole Interwebs. I wanted it for years and I finally bought it with my CT money and I'm very, very happy I have it.

A: Following are screens or data boxes which can be selected for your unit setup: Speed - The current rate of speed at which you are moving since last reset. Speed - Maximum The maximum speed reached since last reset. Speed - Moving Avg. The average speed of the device while moving since last reset.

Q: can you download mapps is this unit able to download additional maps road an water , hiking ......... also extra memory micro sd card ?

A: Actually you can download maps, but it uses a work around where you rename the map file with the basemap filename and the etrex 10 will load the map. Of course, you have to ensure the map is small enough to fit in the very limited memory. There are many free online resources for creating a map for an area you want, just keep the size small. Being from Alberta, I have the complete Alberta Trail Maps on my eTrex 10 as it only takes up 1.2MB and gives me every trail in Alberta and surrounding areas. Couldn't be happier!!!

A: Hi Jill, The eTrex 10 doesn't have any snowmobile trails on the device. For snowmobiles I would suggest the Montana 610 device and you could look into loading 3rd party snowmobile trails
