I think this detected some wiring that wasn't there but it was a lot better than the cheap one I had been using. I like the fact that it showed both edges of the stud. I was putting up a handrail that I wanted as secure as possible.

Q: At startup is there a light indicator to show the unit is on? The button does not seem to depress so how do I know if the unit is on or possibly faulty?

A: The button doesn’t push very much, but should click. And there is no light on start up but if you’re holding the button and slide the stud finder along the wall it should light up as it gets to the studs.

A: The Franklin 50 is not a reliable stud finder it has a flaw in the button you press to activate it. my suggestion would be to buy a Franklin M150 it will find metal, electrical wire, and your studs. A little more expensive but worth it
