Not meant for glass stove tops

It’s a good size, comes with the rack which seemed quite light and flimsy, but handled the jars well. One thing I didn’t realize is these canners are NOT supposed to be used on flat glass stove tops. There is danger of damaging the surface with heat, as the bottom is concave and a vacuum could form, especially with a little water splashing down. Also shouldn’t move it at all when it is filled and very heavy. The warning says the glass could scratch or crack. However, I was ready to go by the time I went and bought this, so I used it. I put some tabs made of folded up tin foil under two side edges to make it impossible to seal, and got it centered on burner and filled it up one jug at a time so I wouldn’t slide it around. My stove is about 8 years old already and a bit scratched so took a chance.

Q: This pot is huge much bigger than my burner. Can I even use it? I have a normal electric stove not a glass top.

  • A: Too cumbersome, too heavy with water on glass top. Went with stockpot to waterbath

Q: what size jars? the ad says that this canner holds 7 jars. what size jars? I usually use pint and, half pint jars. so how many pint jars would it fit, and how many half pint jars?

  • A: Not deep enough to cover quart jars to the required 2 inches, and if barely covered, the boil will boil over. Good for 500 ml jars. I was able to stack 250 and 125 ml jars to get more than 7 but that's probably a canning no-no. However the rack has huge gaps, not enough support rings, and these smaller jars fall through under it, tiip over, get stuck, and it is generally a pain in the butt.

  • A: Yes, you can cook soup in this pot but it is VERY large so it would have to be a great deal of soup!

Q: Can this be used on glass cooktop? There is a warning inside that the enamel could fuse to the cooktop. Should I swap this for another pot?

  • A: Yes, I just broke my glass cooktop. I had used it several times before with this canning pot but I left the burner on high and the cooktop shattered and fused to the pot. Now I need to buy a new range and a new canning pot. I am looking for a different canning pot.

Q: Would this be suitable for homebrew? Would this be suitable as a boiling pot for making wort for home brew beer?

2 Answers
  • A: You could do that in this pot, but I can almost guarantee that you would wish for a bigger pot right away. You can use any pot to boil wort, this is no different, but 20.4L /5.38 gallons with space so it won't boil over for an hour, you would have to do a "batch" with less than 4 Gallons in the fermenter. My advise get the biggest pot you can, and keep in mind hops will make it foam up, and you will loose at least a gallon by boiling for an hour maybe more depending on height to width of the pot. Turkey frying pots might be a better thing to look at.
