We are super happy with all of our Champion generators! We live off grid & rely exclusively on our generators for power. Our previous generator has over 4300 hours on it & 3500 hours on the other one. With proper maintenance they last a long time. The only reason we bought this one is because we wanted one that was more portable than the bigger ones we have. We live in The Yukon and in the winter it can get down to -40 so we heavily rely on our generator for powering everything in our household. I can't recommend Champion generators enough. I highly recommend them & I personally won't buy any other brands.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

Note to Champion that we love this generator and do recommend it - it's a reasonable weight for the output it provides. We have added the Champion wheel kit to this and recommend doing that. We have used this during the Ontario derecho, ice storm and power outages. We maintain it and follow the manual. In fact, this is our second purchase of this model for another location. But --- the service at Canadian Tire is a serious issue that caused us major inconvenience. We ordered this generator online for pickup the next day with threat of an ice storm. After I ordered and paid there were THREE left in inventory. Later the same day I checked again - there was still inventory in place online. We were unable to get there same day. However, when we went to pick it up the next morning early we were finally advised (after some wait) that there was no inventory. Someone else got our generator. It will be easy for them to say it was a busy hectic time. But what they cannot say is that we got an apology. We did not. In fact the store manager offered a refund as if that was even in question. We drove to Lindsay right away (in a pending storm) and staff there were phenomenal and there were THREE staff to help us load into our vehicle. Huge service difference. I hope I never have to go to Lansdowne again. Leadership in retail and business is everything. It impacts how your staff operate and treat customers. Don't trust their online inventory. I never will again. I've submitted an inquiry and complaint to Canadian Tire and have yet to hear a thing back from anyone.

    Solid unit

Bought this generator for power outage backup and hunting trips. Very easy to use and very reasonable noise level. Also love the CO Shield feature! Can lift it in and out if the truck in my own. Has powered everything I've asked it to so far.

    Questions

    1 - 3 of 3 Questions

Q: What temperature is this generator good for? I was looking at another one but it is only good in -15 to +40 so no good for Canadian winters... Was wondering about this one.

    • A: I live in Nova Scotia, where hurricane season is from June to November and this generator is working fine. I haven't faced any issue. I used it during Fiona, continues used for whole week.

Q: Can I use this to charge solar batteries though a 30amp 12v charger? I know this is not an inverter generator so its not pure sine, I just want to make sure I don't damage my Victron charger and 12v battery.

    • A: The answer you are looking for is a little more complex than it would appear on the surface. The key to charging solar batteries lurks in the internal circuitry of your battery charger. The battery charger - if it is a quality unit will have multiple fuses to protect your lithium batteries and Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries, in the event of each of the batteries being fully dead and requesting more than the 30amps available. Keep in mind these are peak demand values and are only required if you are running your AC units continuously off of your battery banks, in which case you will need a bigger Gen for sure. If you are running Lead acid you have no worries charging 135lb batteries. If you are running top end Renology batteries, they all have internal Battery management systems (BMS) that will protect the batteries from any overcharge conditions that a cheap charger failed to blow the fuses on. The high end BMS's all have Bluetooth Apps that will give you Real-time data on the charging rates and condition of each individual battery within your Solar system. Victron chargers are Bluetooth and will stream the data to your phone App. Your Solar charger and the "RV Park Shore Power" charger are separate and completely different units with their own protection circuits. Victron units are expensive and well protected systems. The bigger danger to all RV electrical power systems are badly designed RV Shore power systems, that are famous across B.C. I can say for certain. The Gen is circuit protected with fuses, the installer of your Victron will have it protected with fuses that will not exceed the capability of your generator. The Victron Solar charger will not be exposed to system shorts if properly designed and installed. If you are still worried, you can buy individual buss protection with Super fuses matched to each battery, order with Bluetooth and you can monitor in real time what each battery Master fuse is doing (Overkill on Renology LiFePo batteries with Bluetooth BMS). The BMS will only hit Max rating for a short period, the the Shore power management system that is built into your AC powered battery charger will take over and limit the charge rate to a much lower and safer charge rate. I hope this helps. Your biggest danger to damage is large Shore Power spikes. Never cheap out on the AC powered battery charger, it is the master link to charging expensive Lithium batteries, and always protect batteries and key components with Master fuses (Preferably Bluetooth) that are the same size as the Max rating for your components (e.g. batteries). Just because your RV dealer claims to know these systems, if they do not stock LiFe parts they may be blowing smoke out out their blowhole. The Generator works perfect for my 400amp battery system. With Solar it is not needed often, but is a good backup system because the system is well designed, and protected. Don't forget that a 12V Dc to DC charge converter is required to deliver a constant 12V charge that YOUR alternator CANNOT provide while your are driving down the road. Your car/truck/RV alternator will overcharge your Lithium batteries and could pose a fire risk.

Q: How to start this beast in minus temps????   In the summer, it is 1st pull to start….below zero I cannot start this thing - and that would be rather nice when needed most…I have premium treated gas and synthetic oil in mine.

    • A: We are sorry to hear this. You can try a hotter spark plug and thinner oil: 5W-30 and a #5 spark plug in place of the #6 in our NGK plug recommendation. Here’s an example: NGK BPR5HS or NGK BPR5ES instead of NGK BPR6HS or BPR6ES. If the machine is older, then you want to make sure to use fresh fuel and maybe run some fuel system cleaner through a tank and see if it improves as well.
