Q: why is the Can Tire 80w90 so yellow? Compared to other 80w90 dino gear oils, Can Tires 80w90 appears to be extremely yellow, compared to a light brown of others.

A: This is a great question to ask, because an 80W90 GL-5 EP Gear Oil product should probably have a visual appearance more like a “ 4.5 – 5” color, according to the ASTM D 1500 Color Conversion Table. So this all depends on what your definition of “yellow” is, and how it lines-up with the ASTM D 1500 Color Conversion Table number system. With all of that said, we would strongly recommend that you send a sample of the suspect oil to a local oil analysis lab - ask them to run it against 80W90 GL-5 specifications. They can then tell you if you’ve got an 80W90 GL-5 oil sample that looks right, or if looks deficient in any way. Bottom line: please have the suspect oil tested before using.
