Wood pellets for cat litter

I buy these instead of cat litter. They keep the smell away and are much less messy. The cats enjoy them quite a bit. I've been using them for years and don't plan on switching

PROS / CONS

I find most times when purchasing at Canadian tire that the pellets have absorbed or gotten wet by storing them outside. When arriving at home, I have to sift what’s left through the bag at whatever would be salvageable. Sometimes less than half the bag is useable pellets. Other than that, the pellet brand is the only one I purchase as I like how they burn hot heat, and for a long time.

Q: any one have any problems with this stove my unit does not work right runs 1 hour goes out pellets do not stop does not relight instructions are useless

  • A: If your stove is lighting off and the pellets are being supplied to the burn pot then your problem is with your draft setting. The stove will light off and supply pellets initially and burn out if the draft is not set properly. Draft setting depend on the direction of wind and barometric pressure and is not the same at all times you may have to experiment to find the best burn at any particular time. Your stove should have a failure warning which you can reset according to your manual.

Q: Is this safe to use for puppies litter? I will have puppies in 2 weeks. Mostly are saying good for cat. Thanks for any reply.

  • A: We used this product for years as kitty litter. I would be hesitant to use it for puppies or young dogs in case they chewed/ingested it. We used puppy pads to house train our dogs and still use them for our geriatric, diabetic dog.

Q: Hi has anyone tried these pellets as cat litter? If so how did it go?  i’m looking for an earth friendly alternative to regular litter. Thank you!

  • A: This is excellent as kitty litter and completely safe as it does not contain phenols which are poisonous to cats, over time accumulating in their liver and causing liver failure. Softwood pellets are very high in phenols contained in the oil but these hardwood pellets have minute to zero amounts of phenols. The cat absorbs the oil through his paws when walking on the litter plus inhales some through the vapor. It is slow poisoning. I experienced it with my kitty when I started to use softwood and then finally had to switch to hardwood or he would have died. To conclude, yes these are safe pellets for cats, use them with confidence. The only problem you can have is that many cats prefer clay litter and will not take to these hardwood pellets. You have to try it out and see if the cat likes it. You can also wean him onto the pellets if you slowly add it to clay litter to start and over time add more and then finally when the cat is used to it use the pellets on their own.

  • A: I have a portable Wood Pellet stove with a 30lb hopper. On the lowest setting I was able to keep my 1000 sq/ft home at 22 Degrees for 1-1.5 Days, depending on the temperature outside.

  • A: The pellets are 100% hardwood, there are no additives, can be used in pellet smokers. They are cheaper than flavored wood pellets and they are doing as good of a job smoke wise!
