It went together easily, and the shelves are actually sized correctly for DVDs. The only draw back is that it isn't large, had to buy two to hold my current collection (but they frame the sides of the TV stand nicely)

Q: what are the dimensions of the shelving inside the unit? Are they large enough and sturdy enough to hold a stereo receiver and 5 disc CD player?

A: The shelves (doors and interior) are approx. 5 1/2" in depth. Perfect for cds and books.
