Easy to install. Not as quiet as advertised.

Fairly easy to install from the bathroom side of the ceiling. My one displeasure is that the fan is not as quiet as advertised. A 2 sones fan should come in a 37.99 dB. My fan came in at about 45 dB when measured 1 m from the uninstalled fan. The fan was much noiser when installed in the ceiling, but most of the extra sound was due to the insulated 4" vent tube (56 dB). I tried a second fan and recorded about the same noise levels as the first fan.

RH exhaust, made brackets, retrofit install, joist

I bought this unit because the exhaust is on the rear right, which matched the existing install. This install was suspended between joists. Flanged brackets for installation came with the unit, but the instructions were unclear on how they might aid installation. Looking at the design, it appears to me that they are meant for installation above a precisely sized opening in gyprock, or to be used on precisely placed framing prior to gyprock installation. If there were a large flange with receptacle nuts and a provided drill pattern template for matching screw holes through the gyprock, the snap in feature of these flanges would have greatly aided installation. I made my own sheet metal flanges, drilled the housing in two places on each edge. I then put the flanges in place secured through the gyprock, followed by match drilling a tiny hole for sheet metal screws through my made flanges from inside the housing while the housing was held in place. The original installation used rigid aluminum ducting. This unit is designed for flexible duct. I cut the original ducting back about 8 inches with a hand held rotary tool and cutoff disc (not an exact or easy process: there was a lot of sheet metal snipping in addition to the grinding). I then added a piece of flex duct, which got trimmed after the housing was in place. This method still requires plaster over the screw heads that attach to my self-made flanges. The P***c fans have a neat looking bracket arrangement that folds to go in through the rectangular hole in the gyprock, stretches to span between joists, and allows their unit to be flange installed with vertical screws from the visible side of the gyprock. I have not used this, but it looks like a better solution with no patching required. I would have bought one of their units, but they only feature left rear exhaust. Sound was noticeable, but quieter than the original fan. While I was not confused by the different side lengths on the rectangular opening required, it is possible that a square unit would render sizing the opening more foolproof.
