What are the different types of fishing reel?

The four main types of fishing reels include:

-Spinning or spin reels are the most popular, offering easy access to line and lots of capacity, as well as accurate casting.

-Spincast reels are considered the easiest to control during casts, but less accurate casting, and is a great choice for novice anglers.

-Baitcasting reels are more difficult to use and best paired with heavier lines and lures but offer the highest degree of accuracy for casting.

-Fly reels are specifically designed for certain weights of fly-fishing lines and backing.

What should I look for in a fishing reel?

Important features include rust-resistant parts, whether you want a built-in brake system and the weight of the reel. You'll want to make sure you choose a reel that can hold enough of your chosen fishing line.

How do I know which fishing reel to buy?

If you'll be fishing for a wide range of species, a spinning reel will likely be your best bet, while baitcasting reels may be more your style if you're an expert angler. Fly reels are required on fly fishing rods, so if you're getting into fly fishing, you'll need one.

Can any reel go on any rod?

Reels and rods are not universally compatible. Spinning reels may be compatible with many types of rods but fly reels can only be used with fly rods. You may have some success mixing and matching, but it's best to fit reels to compatible rods.
