Strong smell

This is a strong and heavy garden burner, great for using outside on the patio. Bear in mind that it emits a very strong smell of kerosene - we do not recommend that you have this lit while eating. Since it's an open flame, keep pets away from it or place a large glass cylinder around it (also helps prevent the wind from blowing it everywhere.) It's best to bring it indoors or store in the garage during the winter to prevent cracks.

Thank you for your feedback. Yes the gel fuel can have a bit of an odor to it when burning, just as wood fires smell of burning wood. I'm not sure which gel you used, but the Paramount EcoLogo gel fuel (in the green can) has less of an odor when burning than the regular (yellow can) so you may want to try that. And yes, you should definitely store the unit in a garage or basement during winter to protect it from damaged caused by freeze/thaw. Also be sure to store any unused gel fuel in a cool dry place.
