Do not buy!!

Do not buy. This mix is mostly perlite, sand and sticks. No actual usable soil to speak of. If you are new to seed starting you will be sorely disappointed.

Discovering gnats is never pleasant, and we apologize for this. Our peat-free soils are made with composted ingredients that are rich in organic matter to support healthy plant growth. Because of this high organic matter, it can occasionally create conditions that fungus gnats are attracted to, particularly when conditions are warm and moist. Gnats are common and manageable with a little moisture control. To help prevent them, we recommend letting the soil dry out completely before watering and watering from the bottom once roots have established. Our soil is not your typical peat mix, and has different watering requirements that can take some getting used to. Check the soil moisture below the surface before adding more water. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention as we are continuously looking to improve. If you’re still experiencing issues, we’d be happy to help with additional tips or solutions. Full of sticks ! And I dont mean the odd one. If this was potting/garden soil I wouldn't mind but when you have to pick out debris to fit in small potting trays what's the point. Wish I read the reviews before buying .

Q: As pointed out by a company rep, the sticks, bark, etc. will eventually break down. Walker Industries, the parent of the product manufacturer could surely afford to wait for two or three more years to allow for further break down. Why didn't they?

A: I remain unconvinced. ALL seed starting mixtures contain wood fibre. The point is that yours contains an EXCESSIVE amount. Show us the studies, preferably peer reviewed, that back up your claim that it “performs the same or better than tradition peat mixes”.
