Q: What is the "A" or "R" value for light bulbs mean? For Product #52-1388-8, the descriptive title says "A15" and the product details says "A19". Which is correct? What do these terms mean? I need replacement for Philips Director 60W.

  • A: You are correct. There is an error on the webpage for the 052-1388. The title/headline is correct, but the bullet point says LED A19 when it should say LED A15. The A and R letters designate specific types of light bulbs. A stands for Arbitrary. “A” bulbs are the most common type and are for general household use. They have an “Edison” base (also known as a medium or E26 base) that screws into an electrical socket. The number designation in the code is typically the width of the bulb at its widest point designated in eighths of an inch. So an A15 is an A shape bulb and is 1.875 inches (or 15/8) in diameter. R stands for Reflector. R bulbs usually have an Edison base also and are typically used in recessed cans or in track lighting. The best replacement for a Philips Director 60W bulb will depend on how and where it is being used. You can look for a light bulb in any of the following shapes that delivers 800 lumens of light or brightness. · An A19 is an acceptable replacement if used in a general household lamp or light fixture. · An R20 is an acceptable replacement if used in recessed cans or track lighting where flood light is desired. · A PAR20 is an acceptable replacement if used in recessed cans or track lighting where directional or spot light is desired.
