    Good feeder, bad suet?

I hung this feeder from a branch of a spruce tree, and I know it works, because I saw a downy woodpecker cling to it upside down. But it turned its beak up for the suet, possibly because it was the wrong flavour. I used berry-flavoured suet, and I probably should have used insect- or peanut-flavoured suet.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

Perfect for feeding woodpeckers and nuthatches

This is a very well-designed suet feeder. Some other reviews have missed the point of why only the bottom is accessible. It's because woodpeckers and nuthatches don't mind feeding upside down, but most other birds can't. If you want to give all of your suet to the starlings and blue jays, then by all means get a vertical cage.

    Great suet camouflage

I have had this item for 2 years now. I have had song birds, pileated woodpecker, and sap suckers. I've had some good laughs at watching the crows get onto this, maybe I just have stupid crows. I've only seen one starling get attached but they can't hang on for long. This keeps the suet dry and fresh. Birds in Vancouver BC like this item and so do I.

    Only the crows like it!

I wish I'd read the reviews before buying. Only the crows liked it. I returned this to CT for a full refund and went back to my old wire cage suet feeder and all the small birds quickly returned! Dec. 2018

    birds are loving it

I bought this before seeing the bad reviews so I wasn't too optimistic but put it out anyway. Just used regular suet cakes and within a few weeks (it did take that long) a variety of birds found it. The coolest thing was to see a mother woodpecker go up, get some food, bring it down to her two younglings on the deck railing and feed them. We also see chickadees and wrens. Must admit our backyard faces woods and a stream; not sure how it would fare in a totally urban environment.

    Yes, I recommend this product.
