Save yourself hours of rework - not recommended

I find this product unusable. The only way it can be applied without looking bad was to have one person wiping immediately (1 second) behind the person applying the stain. On a small shelf (15x24), you could not cover the shelf before it dried and left blotches. So, one person wipes on and one wipes off. You have to do no more than 6 inches width at a time which still left blotches on the overlap because it dries within seconds. Any corners or bends (like the shelf edges cannot be made to look good. There isn't enough time to do the top, the edge and cleanup the bottom edge before it sets so you end up with blotches no matter what. I'm now looking to resand the entire project and start over with another product. Highly recommend avoiding this water-based stain for any project - it's impossible to make even smaller projects look good. I did use the prestain conditioner and applied using a foam brush.

No, I do not recommend this product.

TERRIBLE! PLEASE DON'T USE.

Absolutely terrible, Dries in seconds. Looks like paint, hides all wooden grain. Impossible to not have streaks, lines and blotches.

Drys too fast and not evenly on oak.

Drys too fast to be absorbed evenly on oak. I like the color selections but they almost need to add some type of retarder to slow the drying time for a working timew of 30 minutes. I would not reccomend this product.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Thank you for taking the time to review the Water Based Stain. We apologize you did not get the desired results when using for your project. Since this is water based it does dry quicker compared to an oil based stain. Difficult to work with

Thick formula and quick dry time makes completing a precise result nearly impossible. You need to work VERY fast and sloppy in order to hopefully prevent pooling of the stain on the wood. I attempted this stain on standard stair treads and they were a little too big to use this product with 100% desired effectiveness. I think I only managed two boards out about 40 that didn’t have streaks of solid stain or pooling. I do like that you can use this product indoors because it doesn’t give off any odor. I’d use again on a small project during the winter when it’s too cold to work outside or in a garage with oil stain.

Paint. This is paint. This is not a stain.

Looks like paint. Spreads like paint. Applied and wiped off within 2 min as per instructions and now I have a painted grey looking plywood instead of weathered oak stain that it is supposed to be. How exactly is this a stain ? False advertising. Stick to oil based minwax stains people.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Q: Can this stain be used outside?

  • A: Hello. We only recommend Gel Stain to be applied to outdoor surfaces. Even if topcoated with one of our exterior protective finishes, the stain color will fade quickly. Regards, Minwax Customer Support
