Worked well for two years

Bought this model and the previous generation 70L. Liked the timer and humidiity display. Both dried out rooms really well. After two seasons of use, both stopped extracting water. Do not recommend the 70L Whirlpool models as they do not last very long. Very expensive investment for only two season's use.

Great while it lasted

I bought this dehumidifier 2 years ago and it worked flawlessly as advertised, very happy with the product. This year I turned it on and everything works, just no water in the bucket. Now it will cost more to repair than replace. If you go for this one, go for the extended warranty.

Got this one to deal with the humid summer we have this year. However, it runs very hot and loud that am afraid my AC will burn out. not a happy camper with this one.

Q: Great Karmak, how noisy is it?
Some of the reviews mention the high noise level of this item. How does it compare to: a rangehood fan, a window airconditionner, or my ex-wife during PMS? You don't know her, but just imagine the worst.

Q: Is this programmable?
Is this unit not programmable? If it is, can you not set the humidity at 40%? If I can't program it to keep the humidity at 40%, no matter what the ambient or outdoor humidity is, then it's useless.

A: Yes you can set the humidity that it will keep working until. Better than the Danby(%35) you can set it down to 30%. I had mine on auto fan and set the %. If you wanted to you set to max fan and live in a desert like environment.

Q: How does the hose drain option work?
Is the hose drain gravity fed, i.e. drain needs to be lower than bucket?
Is the hose drain auto pump driven, i.e. drain can be higher than bucket?

A: First you need to go back to the store and get some puddy to plug the hole that fills the bucket. Yes thats right, you need to get something to plug the hole even though there is no mention of this in the instructions. Then you Hook up your drain hose and turn the unit on. I called the toll free number and thats what they told me.

Q: does this blow hot air?
we are using a unit in our basement and it blows hot air - it does a great job removing moisture but the basement is almost unbearable.. just curious if all models are like this?

A: It is a trade off for having dry air as compared to cool damp air. It is a win-win situation if you are trying to heat the area in the heating season. And yes they all do this. Suggest using a fan to circulate the air better.

Q: Fan
This model has an Auto On/Off setting for the fan, Mine never shuts off..... ever!
is this normal?
I phoned Whirlpool they had no idea and suggested I take it for repairs.
Anyone else have this?

A: The unit has an on and off button- just use it. But seriously the unit must sense the humidity in the air other wise it will not work. Keep all doors and windows closed when the unit is on or it will run for ever.

Q: Does square footage include entire house?
Will this remove moisture from the three levels of the house, or will it only remove for the basement level (given that it is in the basement)?

A: It will remove moisture form all levels as it is doing in mine home. That given your unit should be based on square footage of your home instead of just the basement. Cool damp air will gravitate to the lower levels. If the unit is not big enough it will burn the compressor out.

Q: Is it normal to have no water in the bucket
I have had my dehumidifier plugged in for 3 days now. The humidity is 50%. I have it on automatic and it never shuts off. There is not one drop of water in the bucket. Is this normal

A: If it at 50% you could lower the humidity setting and see if you get water or put a bowl of water beside the machine and see if water collects in the bucket. Also adjust the fan speed. You'll know either way if it working.

Q: What is the difference between the 70 pint (43-5439-6) and 50 pint (43-5438-8) whirlpool dehumidifiers?
Both units show the same features in the compare selection, including the physical measurements of the unit. I'll be using the drain hose feature so the size of the bucket does not matter and I suspect it may run 24 hours aday.

A: it refers to the size of the holding bucket of the machine.

Q: what does it cost to run this unit
I understand that it depends on how long the unit runs but if the fan runs all the time there must be an average cost per month

2 Answers
A: The fan must run to sense the humidity of the area. The fan will cycle fast to slow depending on the setting and how much humidity is in the air. Costs should not be a factor if is Energy Efficient. Costs of a persons health should not be a factor either. You be the judge?
