Easy set up. Hopefully the bats move in

We recently hadan umbrella bat in our patio. We installed this bat house in our back yard are taking the umbrella down nighty. Hopefully the bats find it and use it as they definitely are doing their job bat night with the amount of droppings on our table they are eating lots of bugs.

Great built bat house

Solid build. Mounts by two screws on the bottom panel (not one top one bottom) so hopefully the leverage doesn't loosen it over time. I would purchase this again (and might, to have a second bat house other side of yard). Painted it black for Alberta climate, which is a shame because it's really nice wood build.

Growing mould or mildew already

Purchased last autumn and mounted on a south-facing shed. There is already mould growing on the box despite it saying it's weather-proof and treated for "longevity". Definitely do not mount this without treating it or painting it.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Q: Are you sh-tting me? Why I want bats? And especially 300 of this f-ers! Please esplain.

  • A: To be honest bats are becoming a endangered species. No matter how you feel we need to protect them and provide them with the habitat that they need. A single bat can eat up to 1,200 mosquitoes a “hour”. Imagine that!  They are nocturnal hunters so really aren’t a problem to me. Just saviours who keep the pests away.

Q: How can I attract bats to use the cabin?

1 Answer
  • A: Good ways to attract bats to your cabin/ house is to install a bay house at a height of at least 6-9 feet from the ground. A water source like a pond river or stream is idea. Alternatively a bird bath or small pond near the bay house will help. Fragrant flowers herbs etc that attract insects are also very helpful. We hope this helps.

Q: Is there any sort of mounting hardware included?

1 Answer
  • A: Thanks for your inquiry, Andrew365. Due to the variety of mounting applications or locations, we do not include any mounting hardware for our bat houses. The bat house can be mounted in a couple of different ways. In either mounting style, it is generally recommended the house be mounted 15-20 feet above the ground with a south-eastern to south-western exposure. The house can be flush mounted directly onto a building such as a barn or house by using screws that are approximately 1/2" longer than the back of the house. We recommend using 4 screws, one in each corner, and screwed in through the front of the house and into the wood of the building/structure. Pilot holes can be drilled but typically are not necessary with cedar. We do not generally recommend mounting on a tree as this provides easy access for predators to disturb the bat house. An alternate mounting option would be to pole mount the bat house by using a pole/pipe and pipe clamps that one can typically find in the plumbing section of your Canadian Tire (think top rail of chain link fence). Two pipe clamps can be mounted around the pole and screwed into the back side of the bat house, one near the top above the bat chamber and one on the landing portion below the bat chamber.

Q: How is this product mounted? I want to attach it to a metal pole about 5" in diameter, so I'll likely need a strap of some sort.

1 Answer
  • A: Flush mounting to a pole is an ideal way to hang these. The best way to mount the bat house to a pole is by using (2) 2-hole pipe straps that fit the metal pole being used. Recommend putting the pipe strap on the back of the bat house, one towards the top of the house and the second strap towards the bottom of the house. You can also try to hang the bat house a minimum of 15 feet off the ground, if possible, and in a space clear of obstacles.
