We've been buying these bags for a while, and we find they fit the green bin container we have, and are dependably sturdy -- as long as you understand they are designed to break down when they come into contact with high levels of moisture in industrial organic waste sites. Liquid will begin to break down the compostable bags, resulting in them ripping, but you can avoid this situation by taking care to throw in some absorbent materials (paper or paper towel) with any wet materials you throw in the green bin.

Q: What is it made of? In Ottawa, plastic liners are NOT allowed EVEN if the material is labelled as biodegradable. Please indicate if these liners are a plastic or paper product.

Q: how long does it take to degrade Likewise compostable kitchen bin liners - how long does it take to degrade?

  • A: In order for the bags to be certified as compostable by BPI and BNQ they must completely degrade in less than 180 days in a controlled municipal compost facility. This means that there can be no trace of the bag in 180 days, when disposed of in a municipal compost facility. They have a shelf life of 2 years prior to use.
