    Came without sheath

This was advertised as "store clearance". When I picked it up from the store the knife came wrapped in a mere piece of paper and the original packaging and sheath were missing. I was kind of caught by surprise and took it anyway only to find out that a sharp knife like this shouldn't be kept without sheath. So I had to buy a sheath from a different supplier which ate up all the savings from the clearance. The knife seems to be OK, but if you intend to do some serious batoning, you should definitely go for a longer blade than this one.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Q: Is this a good knife for camping / survival?

    • A: I would say it's a good knife for some LIGHT camping (in a provincial park or somewhere that you're not screwed if it breaks) but I definitely wouldn't bring this on a survival camping trip just based on the fact that I'm not 100% sure that it would hold up. Go with a USA-made gerber like the Prodigy. It costs more, but it's well worth the money since you'll have it for years.

Q: Is this knife stainless steel or would it need to be oil cleaned?

    1 Answer
    • A: Our products use 100% hardenable stainless steel. Hardenable stainless steel is not completely resistant to rust but rather is more corrosion resistant to rust. Corrosion can occur in the absence of proper maintenance or in continued damp or humid environments. Your Gerber product should be cleaned, dried, and re-oiled periodically to inhibit rust and corrosion; this is especially true in a damp or marine environment. If your Gerber product comes in contact with any substance that you are uncertain about, it is always a good idea to wash your blade off with tap water, dry it, and apply a light coat of oil to it. If your Gerber product comes into contact with saltwater you must flush it with tap water immediately after use and coat it with good quality oil. Salt water is extremely corrosive and will attack and destroy any type of steel. After cleaning, re-oil your Gerber product with gun oil or 3-in-1 oil. Buff stained areas with a polishing cloth or a non-metallic abrasive, such as a Scotchbrite pad.
