Q: Replacing non-programmable elect baseb'd heater thermostat with programmable one. How do I estimate the load/wattage of the heaters-225W/lineal ft? The 400 sf room is mostly windows and is build on posts. While insulated it is open on six sides and is very cold in winter.

    1 Answer
    • A: Customers should not be estimating the wattage of the heater; Customers should know the wattage of the heater. If you are unsure of the wattage of the heater you should seek the assistance of a professional. The wattage should be marked on the base board heater and the maximum and minimum ranges of the old thermostat should be listed on the back of the old thermostat. An electrician would have the right tools and know the proper technique in measuring the wattage of the baseboard. Also when calculating the total wattage used on the line to the thermostat you add the wattage of each baseboards together. So if one is 1500 watts and it is attached to another that is 1000 watts they combine to be a load of 2500 watts connected to the thermostat.

Q: is there a thermostat suitable for 230 Volts, 5000 watts mastercraft garage ceiling heater sold by Canadian tire

    1 Answer
    • A: The instructions state that the heater is designed to have the thermostat interrupt power on the power line and that the heater needs 5000W of power. If the manufacturer of the heater wants the thermostat in the power line and if the power required is 5000W then the electric thermostats produced for NOMA / Garrison by either UPM or Control by Canarm are not going to work (upper limit 3000 to 3600 watts) and the same with most of the competitors. It might be best to install a transformer switch that will allow the user to connect to a 24 volt thermostat. So, either you need to find an electric thermostat that can handle the load of 5000W by another manufacturer (likely a mechanical thermostat) or would require a transformer to use one of the 24 volt models.
