    It's time for LED

Really, the LED technology is there. It's time. There is not ONE single incandescent bulb left in our home and no mercury-laden CFL either. I enjoy seeing the difference in the electricity bill, NEVER having to change bulbs that burn out - and saving the bother of pestering the kids to turn off the light. That whole thing is squared out here. On to the next. This particular bulb is the one we have most of.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

    Wow!

I bought these to replace exposed 100 W light bulbs in the basement, which is partially finished. When another bulb blew, I reached for the halogen bulbs I had bought and noticed the caution written on the side. Because the kids play in the basement and have broken a few bulbs over the years, the threat of extremely hot shattered glass didn't sit well with me. So, I decided to bite the bullet and bought these. To my surprise, they produce as much light as the 100 W bulbs I replaced, and they are truly omnidirectional. And, wow, sturdy! The box says that they are not for enclosed fixtures.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

    Better than CFL's

Very satisfied with the light quality. Consider these to be a better option than CFL's. No mercury, virtually unbreakable.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

    This Bulb Works

This is the energy saving light bulb I have been waiting for. Dimmable, fully ramps up and down and works without problems in home automation. No CFL lag, the light is at full brightness right away. It is also a sturdy bulb, I do not fear for it breaking easily or having a toxic mess to clean up. Very expensive, too expensive really. I bought this bulb as an experiment. While I hope that this product succeeds, it needs to come down in price first.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

    Very bright and natural

I've purchased both the "40W equivalent" and this "60W equivalent" bulb. In both cases very satisfied with the light quality - it looks clean and natural. The 60W is definitely brighter and suits the lamps in my living room better. Compared to my old incandescent bulbs I prefer the light that these produce. Plan to buy a few more in the coming months.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

Q: Is there a LED bulb like this that is brighter? eg. 1600lumens

    • A: At the moment, they seem to top out at 20W and 1200 lumens - and those are usually spots.

Q: can these bulbs be used in enclosed ceiling fixtures

    2 Answers
    • A: It really depends on how closed they are. Some celing fixtures handle 3x60W in a very small containment and with little airflow and those get HOT. They usually shield wiring etc using a reflecting surface and double layers of metal. If you instead put 3x15W = 45W inside that enclosure, the temperature increase in the enclosure will be about 1/4 of the incandescent light temperature increase. If the air reaches 120C with incandescent, it will probably reach 45C with LED. This should not be a huge problem for the LED, if it is designed properly, but LED's do produce a lot of heat in a very little area. If the cooling is marginal, the LED power supply may fail around 85C and the LED itself loses brightness and lifetime. Short of the long - check how hot your light fixture gets with incandescent. Divide the two wattages with each other and calculate the temperature increase for the LED (one quarter is 3x15W / 3*60W). If you are below 40-50C (20-30 degrees C increase from room temperature), you're probably okay. K Ultimately,

Q: Can this light bulb be used out side when its cold?

    • A: Most electronic components work from -40C to 85C. Generally cold is good.

Q: Is this bulb completely dimable? I've had problems with LED bulbs being able to dim down to about 10-20% and then they stay at a constant 10% dim level until it reaches 0% and suddenly turns off. I want a light that has a smooth and crisp 0-100% fade in it.

    • A: All LED bulbs I have seen are a bit flaky at the low end of the dimming range. Some dimmer switches has trouble detecting the low current, dimmers are very different in this sense. What also happens is that the LED has a switched mode power supply with some digital components. Those only start working over the FET Vgs (gate-source voltage turning them ON) and the minimum voltage of the timing circuits. When the LED has low voltage, there is not enough voltage to control it. Of course this could theoretically be done and I won't guarantee there are no LEDs out there that go down to black. This particular LED is really good - and it does not blink. The simplest LED power supplies will blink at 60Hz and it's easy to spot those waving your fingers in front of the bulb in the store exhibit. These ones I actually checked with a PIN diode because I don't want flicker in my office. They passed.
