How to Choose the Right Chain

What are the different types of chains?

Machine chain is the most common type of chain for lifting and securing, typically made from durable steel with thick and short links.

Coil chain is usually made of steel and features longer and thinner loops than machine chain. Coil chain is slightly less durable, but also weighs less, than machine chain.

Single jack chain is a general-purpose chain best suited for hanging light fixtures, bird feeders, and other light objects.

Double loop chain is used for boat chains, children’s swings, and general duty hanging.

Decorative chain is designed for indoor use, this type of chain usually has an attractive finish and can be used to suspend plant pots or lighting.

Plastic chain is light duty and rust-proof, but not recommended for hanging anything heavier than cardboard signs.

What are the different uses for chains?

Chains are typically used to connect, fasten, or hang items. Chains can be used with a padlock to close and secure a gate, can be used to hang flowerpots, and more.

What is the strongest chain material?

Steel is the strongest chain material. Galvanized steel is both physically strong and coated with protective metal like zinc or nickel to prevent rust and corrosion.

What size chain do I need for my trailer?

The many types and gauges of chains may not be approved for use as trailer safety chain and may lack the required load capacity. Trailer safety chain generally needs to be thick and durable with a certain load rating, check with your provincial regulations and trailer owner manual to make sure you choose the right size of chain for your trailer.
