Canning is a great way to preserve, store and enjoy your favourite foods year‑round. The right jars and supplies are essential to start the process.
What are the different types of jars?
Not all canning jars are created equally. From regular to wide mouth, each jar serves its own purpose. Regular mouth canning jars are slightly smaller at the top and work best for jellies, jams, salsa and pickling smaller vegetables. Wide mouth canning jars should be used when freezing your jars since they have more space to allow for liquids to expand.
What’s the difference between Mason jars and regular glass jars?
Mason jars are designed specifically for canning and preserving, which means they're made from thicker, tempered glass that can withstand high heat and pressure. They also feature a two‑piece lid system that creates a vacuum seal to keep air and bacteria out. Regular glass jars, on the other hand, aren’t built for canning they often use thinner glass and lack the sealing technology needed to safely preserve food.
Can Mason jars crack with temperature changes?
Mason jars are made to handle heat, but they can still crack if exposed to sudden, extreme temperature shifts. To prevent thermal shock, always warm your jars before filling them and avoid placing hot jars directly on cold surfaces. Gradual temperature changes help keep your jars intact throughout the canning process.
What size canning jars should I purchase to get started?
Liquids like jams, salsa, sauces, and other small portion sizes can be stored in 4oz or 8oz jars. Large portions of vegetables, jams and meats and seafood should be stored in 12 or 16oz mason jars.
What type of jar is best for pickling?
Wide mount, self-sealing mason jars are the best option for pickling. As the mason jars cool, the lid creates a seal keeping bacteria out. Check out our selection of glass canning jars to preserve and seal in freshness.
