Product Details

The Vermont Castings Carbon Steel Square Shaped Reversible Baking Oven & Pizza Steel provides a versatile surface for baking your bread, pastries, pizza pies, and more. Constructed from durable carbon steel, this reversible baking oven can be cooked on either side. It’s also pre-seasoned with vegetable oil for long-term protection and is safe to use with barbecues, grills, and ovens. This baking oven measures 16-in x 14-in to accommodate most sizes of pizza and pastries.

  • The Vermont Castings Pizza Steel is made of carbon steel and is a versatile surface for baking pizza, bread, pastries and more

  • Premium mild carbon steel construction delivers superior heat retention and heat transfer compared to stone, delivering faster and crispier crusts

  • Made with highly durable carbon steel

  • Pre-seasoned with vegetable oil for long-term protection

  • Reversible, cook on the surface of either side

  • Safe for use with both barbecues and ovens

  • Dimensions: 0.125" D x 16.31" W x 14.18" L (0.76 x 41.4 x 36 cm)

  • Product Care: The Baking Steel comes pre-seasoned with oil. You can build up the seasoning by repeating the process 2-3 times, brushing it with a light coating of oil, then bake the steel in a hot oven for an hour at 400° F. Once a good seasoning has developed, it will be much less likely to rust. Thoroughly dry the steel and store it in a dry environment indoors. Even well seasoned steel will eventually rust when placed in a humid environment. Do not use soap to clean. Washing with soap will require the steel to be re-seasoned. Occasionally rub oil on steel to maintain seasoning.

Questions

1 - 10 of 27 Questions

Q: I have little storage space in my kitchen. Can I just leave it in my oven all the time whether it’s in use or not?

3 Answers
  • A: Leaving it it he oven is a good idea as it will help regulate the temperature while baking. It's a thermal mass thing. When you open the oven door, or if the temp in the oven fluctuates, the hot steel releases heat when the surrounding air temperature drops helping to bring the air in the oven back up to set temperature.

Q: Can this be used on the stove top like a griddle? I’ve seen other baking steels that can be used on burners to act as a griddle and wondering about the versatility of this product.

3 Answers
  • A: Maybe if you are making pan cakes or eggs. It is a solid and heavy piece of steel that has no edges to hold in any greases or juices like typical griddles have.

  • A: Bonjour. Pour ne pas abimer nos couteaux, nous transférons la pizza sur une planche à couper. Le métal de la plaque n’est pas idéal pour couper directement dessus. Bien à vous.

Q: Is it really heavy? Can I just leave it in the oven on a low rack all the time and cook with it there or do you need it in the middle to cook on it? I’m new to all this but I really want a pizza stone and I don’t know what to ask/look for. Thanks

  • A: Hello Laura, I have mine in the oven most of the time. Preheating your oven will take a little longer with the steel in there. I have one and love it. You can keep it on any rack in your oven.

Q: What is the maximum safe temperature for Vermont Castings Square Pizza Baking Steel

  • A: @emily Canadian Tire, I just noticed in the product description that it says "Maximum Cook Temperature (°C): 800 °C (1472.0 °F)" which is significantly higher than your response. Would you please confirm the correct information.

Q: What is the thickness? Reviewer states 1/8" which is not .3 inches as stated in CT description. Doesn't look anywhere near 1/4 inch or more.

  • A: I measured the thickness and is only about 3mm, so half of what is mentioned in the description

Q: How long do you recommend preheating the baking steel? And how long do i need to reheat it if i'm making a second pizza?

1 Answer
  • A: It is recommended to preheat the bbq or oven to around 250℃. Let the pizza steel to heat up for around 45 minutes to an hour. If you want to cook several pizzas, you should let the pizza steel reheat for a few minutes(maybe 10 minutes) before you put the next pizza in. The reason is that the temperature will drop a little bit when you bake the pizza.
