Black tint rustoleum countertop paint kit

I purchased the Rust-Oleum Countertop Paint Kit in the dark tint (black) color. The team at the store mentioned that lighter colors sometimes don’t tint accurately based on customer feedback, so I chose the dark option. I’m very pleased with how it turned out; however, since I’m posting this review right after finishing the project, I can’t yet comment on long-term durability. For prep, I sanded my laminate countertop and used the included degreaser before painting. I followed the directions on the can, using both a nap roller and paintbrush. Be sure to stir the tint thoroughly—it’s a thick, jelly-like paint that tends to settle at the bottom. I applied two coats of the black paint followed by two coats of the clear topcoat. One important tip: when taping around your sink, avoid letting the tape touch the countertop . When I removed mine, it peeled up a small area of paint. Overall, the finish looks smooth, deep in color, and has completely refreshed my countertop

Yes, I recommend this product.

Thank you for all the feedback! For best results, we recommend removing any painter's tape as soon as possible after the last coat of paint. This helps to prevent the paint from pulling away from the surface and creating a jagged edge. You can also score along the edge of the tape to avoid lifting more of the paint. rustoleum-ca

Do NOT Waste Your Time on This Product!

This product does not have a ton of reviews to be found online - those that have written a super short review seem like they have never actually used this kit. This kit has been a hassle from the beginning to the end. The base coat can had a layer of paint settled into the bottom of the can (despite being shaken in store with the machine), thick chunks that would not mix into the rest. This coat covered better than I expected when it was dried - it did need two applications for full coverage. When the base coat was dried, it showed tons of roller lines and brush strokes, even though the proper tools were used and lines were blended. It was very bumpy to the touch - I had hoped this would be helped by the top coat, so on I went. The top coat was also horribly bumpy when finished - I applied two coats with the recommended timings. Think orange peel texture - without the shine. It was not smooth at all. I've come to the conclusion that sanding is my only option now - it has helped to knock down the texture but has removed a lot of the protective factor with hours and hours of hand sanding to not remove all of the topcoat and basecoat. When the kit says no sanding required, this is absolutely not true. I'm ordering an epoxy topcoat to try to salvage this mess - spend your money elsewhere!

Easy to use

(This review was collected as part of a promotion.) When I received the box, I was so impressed with how it was packaged . Living in Canada and the season we are currently in ,this prevented any damage and kept the paint from freezing. Using this kit and the directions provided made for easy application. I did, however, need to bring the paint in for tinting, which thankfully had no cost involved. Once, the old and dated counter was prepped from a light sanding. It was time to start rolling the paint on. I did find using this choice in color that lines were more visible and extra care was needed. After 2 applications and drying time, I was now ready to apply the top coat. I decided to do 3 layers and allowed the recommended drying time in-between. Over all the Rust-oleum counter kit was easy to use and I'm very happy with the ending results.

Not as advertised

(This review was collected as part of a promotion.) I’m not sure if I would recommend this product. It is very easy to apply but very sticky and takes very long to dry. It is an inexpensive fix but would need to redo every couple of years to make it look good. I don’t feel it covers very well and if the space you are costing is in a ventilated place the smell is very strong and horrible. I don’t think it is worth all the trouble.

Questions

1 - 1 of 1 Question

Q: Can this product be applied to an epoxy countertop?

1 Answer
  • A: Hi Tommy, We have not tested our Rust-Oleum HOME Countertop over an epoxy coating. As long as the epoxy coating is water-based, this should be OK. However, it is recommended to test on a small area first.
