I love this kit, makes refinishing furniture/cabinets so easy. My furniture was a dark brown and I am painting it white so it took for then two coats to cover fully, but that is expected.

Peeled off of high touch surfaces

We bought this for our kitchen cupboards. It took much longer to apply then was advertised and looked great when finished. Fast forward a couple of months and the product began peeling off of high touch surfaces or any surfaces that came into contact with steam. Would not recommend this product anywhere near steam.

Great results but you have to put in the time.

We have 20 year old cabinets and were looking for a product that could give our kitchen a new look without going through a full renovation. We tried the 'light base' product with the glaze option. This product delivers on its promise. The end result is fantastic and we are very glad that we went with this product. That said, there are some things people should be aware of before they embark on this journey. First, in spite of the instructions, you do need to sand the cabinets to get rid of bumps/imperfections that will cause problems (streaking) when you apply the glaze. Second, you need to do several coats of the base to get a decent look. Third, you really need to practice to get your glazing technique down pat before you do more obvious areas... try practicing on side panels next to the fridge/oven. Most important, do not skimp on the deglossing step, it is the most boring part of the process but it needs to be done well so that the base coat gets good adherence. This was our biggest issue. Where the deglossing was not done well we are seeing some chipping/scratches. It is not too bad and easy to spot repair. The upshot is that between sanding, base coat(x2), glazing and sealing you are looking at a big job. It was over 30 panels for us (both sides) plus the cabinet fronts... a big job. The glazing step is the most stressful since you have a limited time to get the 'look' just right. We recommend that one person do that step for a consistent look. The glazing is pretty forgiving, but the results you get are proportional to the work you put in. With patience and effort results are well worth it.

Q: My wood cabinets have a varnish finish on them. Do I need to prime them first?

A: In the kit is a de-glosser that is supposed to take the varnish off. You will wash your cupboards, then with a scrub pad (also provided), you will saturate it with the de-glosser and scrub the cabinets. Then wipe them down, dry them and apply the paint.

Q: We have dark stained oak cabinets. Can we use the kit to make them white? Will we just need 2 coats?

A: The rustolium kit calls for 2 coats of a white base followed by a color stain. If you want white cupboards use a white paint. Two coats will be required.

Q: Can this be used on RV cabinets? Some are wood, some are laminate, and some are a plastic wood look laminate.

A: Hi Sandra, Great question! Yes, our Cabinet Transformations kit can be applied to already painted cabinets. To obtain best results, take cabinet doors off hinges and drawers out of frames. Remove all cabinet hardware, including hinges, drawer pulls, and knobs. The surface of the cabinets must be completely cleaned and de-glossed in accordance to the instructions to ensure proper performance.

A: Hi Mandy, Great question! One Cabinet Transformations Kit will cover 100 sq. ft. If you plan on painting the inside of your cabinets, you will need two kits.

Q: Is this product suitable for white melamine cabinets? Mine are smooth are ~30 yrs old so I am looking for the right product to make them look newer/cleaner.

A: Hi Torborgie, Our Cabinet Transformations can be used on your melamine cabinets. However, we recommend priming with our Zinsser Cover Stain first, which eliminates the deglossing step in the kit. The primer is recommended for maximum adhesion.

A: Hi Lola, Our Cabinet Transformations Light kit can only be tinted to the 11 colour choices available. If you get it tinted to another colour we do not offer, we cannot stand behind the product if something goes wrong. We hope this new information is helpful.
