Best Stuff. But mine had used oil in it.

I always use this stuff. But last year I bought and never checked it. And when I went to use it this year, the bottle was used and had old oil in it.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Questions

1 - 6 of 6 Questions

Q: It says here the colour is "brown" but my current oil is "blue" in the Drive Oil Reservoir. Is this oil blue or brown? Is it ok to mix blue with brown? Just does not feel right but don't want to make a decision based on feelings! Thanks

  • A: Super important question, yes it’s blue in the reservoir. We should never mix products in the drive. Who knows where brown got in the description! Cheers

Q: Is this oil 90W?

1 Answer
  • A: Correct. The High-Performance Gear Lube is a 90-weight gear lube but Mercury only recommends this oil in its higher horsepower gearcases 75HP +

Q: How does it get applied? Is there a pump? My understanding is that the gear oll goes in at the bottom of the leg and is addeded until it flows out the top screw hole. Is squeezing the bottle enough pressure to do that or is a pump needed?

1 Answer
  • A: Lower units must be filled from the drain screw. This is something that can be done on lower horsepower outboards with smaller gearcases with just the tube of gear lube inserted into the drain hole and squeezed until it comes out the vent screw hole. On the larger gearcases a bottle pump is needed (CTC number 028-2621). Given the viscosity of the oil and the passages the oil flows through in the gearcase one cannot really fill it from the top. You may be able to get some oil in that way but it will very quickly create an air blockage and invariably burp oil back out.
