Would much rather use a miter saw, but if the job is small and you don't want to haul out a big power tool, this will work fine.

Get a miter saw instead

You can cut anything up to a 2x4 with this miter box kit. The accuracy of the kit is variable. It will do a good job making straight cuts. Miter cuts are usually off by about one degree. This may not sound like a lot, but it makes this miter box useful for doing anything like cutting baseboard, picture frame, a frame around a door, etc. The plastic is quickly worn away by the saw, so the miter box gets more inaccurate the more you use it.
The quality of the saw that comes with the kit is low. The steel used for the blade is too thin and flexes too much when cutting, even when you use proper technique. The teeth are poorly ground, dull fast, and the hardened steel means it can't be re-sharpened. The handle is not comfortable and has loosened after very little use.
An inexpensive miter saw will give you much more accurate (and faster) results than this kit. (The exception to this would be the JobMate miter saw.) Even a regular circular saw with a rafter square will give better 45 degree cuts.

I didn't know how much I would use a mitre box so bought the cheapest one. It does work, pretty average, nothing outstanding about it. If you are going to undertake any large jobs do yourself a favour and getter a better model.

Good occasional mitre box and saw

This works good for those occasional jobs around the house such as baseboard and quarter round. I have also used it for projects the kids need done (it was a good training venture for them too). Cheers.
