Falsely advertised as adjustable temperature

Misleading advertising. This soldering iron is not adjustable. I needed a simple iron for a simple repair job and paid more than twice the price of the one advertised not adjustable, just so that I could set a rough temperature range. Nowhere in any of the literature or packaging does it mention the adjustable temperature so I have no idea why Canadian Tire would advertise this as adjustable temperature. Where are they getting their info from. Is this a bait and switch? Would not recommend.

Tips wobble even when the set screw is properly tightened. Worse, the tips dissolve with rosin-core solder. Other aspects of the iron are fine.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Q: What exactly is that black, pencil-like object, pointed at one end, and forked at the other? Bought this couple days ago, I was wondering what it is used for. Looks like a black pencil, pointed at one end, and forked at the other.

  • A: I've used the fork to bend resistor/capacitor/jumper leads to fit PCB holes; both ends are handy for removing parts too. As others have said, the tool's good for positioning and holding hot items more precisely than heat calloused soldering fingers.

Q: what is the thread size for the replaceable tips?

  • A: Answering my own question... The tips are NOT the threaded replacement type; they are held in with a set screw. Included tips are solid metal with a diameter of 4mm, and therefore will not work for my intended purpose of threaded heatset inserts.

Q: I see that 3 tips are included. How fine are they? I am looking to replace a very small SMD resistor and wondering if this will do the job - ie if the smallest tip is small enough for this detail work.

  • A: I have soldered some fine wire connections using this pen and the pointed tip. I would suggest that you go to the store if possible and look at the tips with the kit to see if you think it is small enough for your purpose.
