Skil Hammer Drill

I bought this a week ago to drill into concrete brick. It worked great. I was replacing a hammer drill I've had for over 30 yrs, it was a Skil as well...They are great entry level general purpose power tool.

Loud Grinding Noise After Minimal Use (Bearing Failure)

I purchased this drill hoping for reliable performance, but I am extremely disappointed. Within just a few weeks of light use, it started making an awful grinding/scraping noise whenever I pull the trigger. It sounds exactly like something is loose or broken inside—my guess is a bad bearing or a gear that has come unseated. The drill still "runs," but the noise is so bad that I’m afraid to use it for fear of it seizing up completely or causing a safety hazard. Grinding noise under load and even free-spinning. · Feels like internal parts are rattling around. · Likely poor-quality bearings. · Clearly not built to last. Bottom Line: Save your money. A drill that fails this quickly is a sign of poor quality control. I will be returning this immediately. Do not buy this if you need a tool you can count on.

Decent Drill for the price

My 40 year old Black & Decker drill finally gave up on me. I had been looking around for several weeks for a decent corded drill and this Skil came on at an excellent sale price. I have used it a little and it seems solid. Drilled some holes in concrete with ease. About the same weight as my old drill, but it has the hammer drilling option. It seems well built and is stable to handle. Seems like good quality. The clamp that retains the depth gauge is not super strong, but is fine for the average user. Reviewed other feedback from others sites and most reviews are positive for this product. Does not come with any kind of case. This is my only ask of the supplier is to offer a storage/carrying case.

Q: Will this also hold small drill bits for smaller holes to hang drapery hardware?

  • A: Yes.  It is adjustable for smaller bits. The drill speed is also adjustable by how far you press in the trigger. I have one for bigger jobs like concrete and my wife has her own for smaller jobs around the house like what you are describing.
