A Favorite, I call it Old Faithful!

I bought this 1/2"er drill back in 2011, the thing has been nothing but a workhorse! BTW, I should add this was my first Maximum tool. Yep, I was leery at first, but for the sale price I figured I'd give it a shot. (Like most of us, we all have or have had Mastercraft tools at some point), besides it was tough to beat Canadian Tire's warranty at the time. I've used this drill for so much reno work, deck building, carports, the list goes on. To this day it has never failed me yet! Since day one, it's always been kept out in my unheated shop, temperature doesnt matter to this old girl, it just wont quit. AND I'm still using the original battery! Sure it feels and looks cumbersome by todays standards, but I still consider it as money very well spent. It just plain works! I'd give it 10 stars if I could. Because it's been such a faithful tool for me I just last week picked up a new Maximum Combo kit. Why? Just because...

Yes, I recommend this product.

Lasts until it doesn't

Bought it a few years ago, worked for about 6 months until the battery started smoking when installed. Exchanged for a new one with no problem, worked for a year or two until the clutch/chuck gave out and now I am unable to install drill bits. Much heavier than the other drills I use. The only advantage is the battery indicator that tells you when it is about to run out. It will be interesting to see if I can find my receipt - 5 year warranty.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Chuck broke

I'm not hard on drills and don't use them much. So it surprised me when one of the teeth on the chuck broke, making the drill useless. I've owned it for a few years and of course can't find the receipt so that was a fail. I presumed Maximum was their best brand and I've never had a chuck break before on even the cheapest drills I've owned, so I'm not impressed. I wouldn't recommend it even though it's on sale...

No, I do not recommend this product.

Q: how many batteries are with this drill when you buy it and is this battery or batteries,( LITHIUM )battery...THANKS

5 Answers
  • A: Only 1 battery comes with it. It does recharge quickly. The problem is, the charger is junk; I had mine replaced twice in 1 yr. under warranty and the battery once. Now the actual drill is broken. I have started using a 15 yr. old Makita that has never failed me. The only problem is the Makita has a short battery life but does charge in 1hr. I wish I didn't break my Ryobe I had for 12 yrs. It fell 24ft and still worked; just that it had a crack in the housing.

Q: Can the charger unit be used to charge 18V Nickel Cadmium battery for 054-1208-4 drill?

1 Answer
  • A: The 054-1208 MX 18V drill kit has a ni-cad battery and the 054-2995 MX 18V drill kit has a lithium battery. The charger in the 054-2995 lithium drill kit will charge both lithium & ni-cad batteries (so it will charge the 054-1208 drill’s battery). However, the charger in 054-1208 ni-cad drill kit cannot be used to charge the 054-2995 drill’s lithium battery.
