Solved the problem

Works great. The plastic part is not threaded but it is soft enough to thread the metal rod into it. Just hold the metal rod with pliers and screw it on. I suspect it is not threaded to allow it to fit on multiple sizes of rods. All in all, it was a very cheap solution to fixing my lamp.

Not suitable replacement

The plastic knob is not threaded inside and therefore does not attach to the post on either lamp or the replacement posts supplied.

Dimmer socket turn knobs are not universally sized

There is nothing wrong with this product, however, after purchasing it to replace a broken knob on a floor lamp, I discovered that dimmer socket turn knobs are not universally sized. Both the knob and extension were slightly too big to fit the dimmer socket on the lamp I was trying to repair. I was able to bore the hole in the new knob slightly bigger to make it fit. It's not a perfect fit, but it works.
