Q: I put the ice melt down under my garage doors to remove built up ice. I have left it now for 5 days is it going to damage the rubber seals or make the doors freeze down?

A: Hello Debra, While we believe that the product should not damage the rubber seals we still do not recommend using it in that fashion. More concerning would be the melt water penetrating the concrete underneath and causing a freeze thaw effect. This is why we instruct that once the melter has begun to work, the user should remove it immediately minimising the potential for freeze thaw to occur. Remove melting snow and ice as soon as the melting action has loosened the ice making it more of a "slush" For more information please reach us at www.alaskan.ca. Thank you

Q: I have ice damming on my roof. Would Alaskan Ice Melter be a suitable way to help reduce the ice buildup. I have asphalt shingles

    1 Answer
    • A: Regrettably, none of our ice melters have been formulated for use on a roof, therefore we cannot recommend it, or guarantee it. If you choose to try an ice melter on your roof you will be using it at your own risk. Some data coming from the roofing industry is stating that ice melters containing either Calcium Chloride or Potassium Chloride will not damage good quality asphalt shingles. As we are not a roofing company we would recommend contacting the installers or manufactures of your roof before trying to remove any ice or snow. There are several major problems when using an ice melter on a roof. One is the high concentration of brine water that will flow out through the eaves trough system. With such a high concentration being applied to such a small spot the potential for plant damage is very high. The second is that Ice melters should never be used as a replacement for shovelling. They are an aid to help in the removal of stubborn snow and ice. They should be applied and once the bond is release the area should be shovelled off. This shovelling could / will damage your roof. The last, and most important problem, is that all ice melters are caustic and will cause corrosion issues with all metal surfaces they contact, that are exposed to the air. This includes nails, troughs and down spouts, and flashing. If you do chose to use it at your own risk there are a few things that you can do to lessen the affects. First remove as much of the loose snow as possible. Second, do not over-apply the product. Finally allow the product to work for 15 minutes to 1/2 an hour. This should allow sufficient time for the ice melter to go through the ice/snow, down to the roof surface.Once it reaches the roof surface it will start to create a briny solution that will spread out, loosening the bond between the ice/snow and the roof it is sitting on. At this time you may begin to remove as much of the snow and ice as possible, which in turn will allow the residual briny solution to drain off and the area to dry. If you should have any further questions or concerns regarding this or any of our products please feel free to contact the vendor at 1-800-268-2806.

Q: Alaskan ice melter 10 kg pails - is this safe to use on wood deck and stairs?

    1 Answer
    • A: Regrettably there is no guaranteed that an ice melter will not harm any surface if it is not used as directed. We do not recommend it as a replacement for removing or shovelling the snow and ice, but as an aid to help with the removal of stubborn ice and snow. If you are unsure about the quality, age or composition of the surface you are treating then we recommend using Get A Grip Super Traction which will not harm surfaces, but it is not an ice melter. It does provide good traction and will help reduce the risk of slips and falls but it will not melt ice and snow. Most surface damage is a result of the natural effects of freeze-thaw cycles, not a chemical attack by the actual ice melter. The challenge with any surface is mostly with these freeze/thaw cycles. When you melt snow and ice you create water. The water will be absorbed into the cement or other porous surfaces, most heavily into the natural occurring cracks and crevices When the ice melter becomes too diluted or the temperature drops below the minimum melting point then the water will eventually refreeze. When water freezes it expands and will put pressure on the cracks and crevices causing larger cracks and crevices to form or even splitting the concrete or other porous surface. Using an ice melter (any ice melter) will increase the number of freeze/thaw cycles. There are a couple of things you can do to increase the safety of using an ice melter but remember there is no guarantee. Do not use rock salt which has a freezing point of -5o Celsius thus increasing the number of freeze/thaw cycles that can occur. Follow the directions for application rates and use. Do not over apply. Apply evenly and avoid piling. Apply at a rate of 50 – 100 g per square metres (1/4 – ½ cup per square yard). Promptly removing the melting water, slush and ice as soon as the melting action has loosened the bond between the ice and surface it is on. This is usually within 10 – 15 minutes of applying. This will allow the area to dry and prevent refreezing, thus helping to stop the number of freeze/thaw cycles and the possibility of future damage. · We do not recommend that you use an ice melter on the following surfaces: Concrete that is less than 1 year old Patterned or coloured concrete Stone or brick masonry (including Flagstone) Pre-cast concrete (steps or paving stones) Stone or concrete surfaces that are chipped, cracked, spalled or have exposed aggregate. Porous surfaces, such as wooden decks and stairs. However, the hazards and risk of injury associated with slippery surfaces must be weighted against the possibility of surface damage. · When Alaskan Ice Melter is used as directed on good quality air-entrained concrete for cold temperatures, and the snow and ice are promptly removed once the bond between ice and surface is release, and the area is then allowed to dry, there should be no surface.
