What are electrical boxes used for?

Electrical boxes are generally used to safely install and wire electrical fixtures like wall outlets, receptacles, lighting, cable connectors, and switches. Once fixtures are wired, they’re closed off safely with a wall plate or cover. Electrical boxes can be installed in walls and ceilings indoors, and some varieties are designed for outdoor use.

What are the different types of electrical boxes?

The main distinction between electrical boxes is new work and old work. New work boxes are designed for installation during home construction and attached directly to studs before drywalling. Old work boxes are designed for installation into existing drywall and are used for remodeling or adding new fixtures. Junction boxes are used specifically to splice wires together, keeping the connection protected and secured while allowing access if needed.

How do I choose an electrical box?

The most important thing to consider when choosing an electrical box is the type and number of fixtures you'll be installing. The number of 'gangs' refers to how many standard size switches or outlets fit in the box. Octagonal boxes can offer more space for wiring, while rectangular boxes are typically easier to install.

How big of an electrical box do I need?

Standard depth boxes are ideal for typical installations like receptacles, light fixtures, and switches. Larger fixtures, such as receptacles with ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) may require a deeper box or extension plate to ensure a good fit.
