A generator is a great investment for any homeowner, as they provide peace of mind when power outages strike. Generators ensure that you stay connected, food doesn’t spoil, and the lights and heat stay on. Having a home standby generator can increase your home’s value and ensure life...

How do you use a generator?

There are two overall types of generators – portable generators that need to be set up and home standby generators that automatically kickstart when the power in your home goes out. Home standby generators connect to your home and the engine will detect if there is an outage, whereas portable outdoor generators run on gasoline and require a couple of steps to set up. Follow these simple steps on how to use a generator to start supplying your home with power:

1. Place the generator at a safe distance from your home and aim the exhaust away from any doors and windows

2. Make sure you have a full tank of fuel and check the oil levels in case you need to refuel or change the oil

3. Ensure the appliances and fixtures you are looking to operate don’t exceed the generator’s capacity

4. Power on the generator according to the user manual

5. Plug in your appliances using heavy-duty outdoor extension cords, starting with appliances that use the most wattage

6. Utilize generator accessories like designated power cords and generator covers to use your generator safely and effectively
