What kind of starter bike should I look for when teaching my kid to ride a bike?

For young kids graduating from tricycles and training wheels to two-wheeled bicycles, the best youth bikes tend to be in the 12 – 16 inch size range. The main features to look out for are easy pedaling, durable construction, and a lightweight frame for easy use and maneuverability. As every kid is different, a good rule of thumb when searching for the right-sized bike is to match your child’s inseam measurement to the minimum seat height setting of the bicycle, which allows their feet to fully reach the ground when seated.

What is the best type of bike for a kid to ride around the neighborhood?

For young children first learning to ride a bike, one of the best and safest options for casual neighborhood riding are balance bikes. These two-wheeled transition bikes resemble standard bicycles, but without the pedals. Balance bikes are a safe and effective option for a child to learn balance, momentum, steering and braking before graduating to a model with pedals.
